I am (perhaps somewhat selfishly?) starting this thread which might be a kind of niche thread I suppose, but I hope I am pleasantly surprised with what people are able to come up with or what they already are familiar with.

I was thinking this post could be used to post our favorite snippets of middle eastern wisdom. I know I for one have always to a certain extent sort of shunned the three religions of the middle east (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) for my perceived views of their tendencies toward personifying God, but I think that the more I'm reading quotes and the more I am exposed to persian culture through stories and such that perhaps this view of mine is an unfair stereotype and simply an ignorant outsider's perspective.

So without further adieu, I'll begin my quotes and hope it catches steam:

Utter a word of truth
That goes against the king,
And behead yourself with
The sword of your own tongue.
--Amir Khusrau Dehlavi (1253-1325 AD)

like I said, these were my perceptions-- right or wrong.

Anyways I still feel there is a certain personification of God. Even to have God "Speak" to someone is to assign God a human-like trait (personification) in a ways, isn't it?

Islam also doesn't allow depictions of God, but personification still happens, does it not?

Now, I'm not even comfortable saying that whatever level of inevitable personification is a bad thing, only that its a feature which for objectivity's sake might as well be noted.

And anyways, this is the quotations forum, I'd still really like a few good middle eastern quotes!
